If you follow my social networks, you must have seen that I’ve been collaborating with Sushi Shop for the past few months.
I accepted this partnership because I think this shop stand out from the others thanks to its creative changes, flavour audacity while respecting the harmony of the tastes. Actually, when I go to Sushishop, it’s not to find Japanese authentic food (for the story, California maki were created in the United States) but I like tasting the association of flavours.
I also accepted this artistic challenge because as I already told here, I must create an Instagram illustration every month, so I have to scratch my brain each month to find a new idea!
This collaboration also gave me the occasion to meet some of you during a special private visit at Le Petit Palais during the Kuniyoshi exhibition, then during a Californian gym session with 8 brave girls amongst you (stiffness for 2 days after that). I couldn’t repeat enough that my blog allows me to experience amazing moments and I remember this chance to myself every day.
So quite naturally after this partnership Sushi Shop asked me to select my favourite recipe from the menu to create a lunchbox that will come out in April 2016 (so actually this month!).
I wanted to combine California maki with stronger flavours, so that this lunchbox would be a real moment of gustatory pleasure.
Usually, I really pay attention to the texture and the spices when I eat: so I tried to reflect this in my lunchbox, which is made of 4 kind of makis, edamame and white cabbage.
a certain order !
I chose my favorite recipes and wanted the degustation to follow a certain order (you can decide which order you prefer though, it’s not the army… but I thought that this order would be particularly interesting).
First, we start by the California Spicy Green tempura (Shrimp tempura, lettuce, chives, wasabi mayonnaise sauce), crunchy with the lettuce and shrimp tempura, the whole spiced up with a wasabi sauce to nice dull the taste buds.

Then, we keep going with the California Tuna & truffle (tuna tartare, oil and truffle sauce, chives) with a strong truffle personality, that I really liked in the London box.

It’s possible to alternate between these two California just to diversify the pleasures.
Then, short break with the cucumber and sesame maki in order to balance with the 2 first that have a stronger taste, and a bit softener before the last!
Maki Concombre Sésame
Indeed the Tazuna maki (avocado, salmon, pomegranate, chives, goma ponzu sauce, sancho pepper, ginger, furikake= spices for the rice), as a final touch, counterbalance with the previous thanks to the softness of the salmon and avocado; the pomegranate explodes in the mouth, the whole mixed to the goma ponzu.
I think it’s pretty nice to finish the degustation by a sweet-sour touch before the dessert, if you see what I mean!
My lunchbox menu also comes with either: rice, or miso soup or a carrot-orange salade. I wanted the lunchbox to be big enough (yes, I have a large appetite) while remaining light (I don’t want you to fall asleep at your desk after lunch!) and in my opinion I found quite a good assortment.
So I hope I will have your feedback this month if you decide to try my lunchbox : I’m looking forward to hearing your impressions, after following or not the order of degustation! (English translation by Quiterie)
